MUMDANCE & LOGOS: SMASHING THE PROTOCOL
'Sankofa' is both a word and symbol native to the Akan language of southern Ghana that stands for the notion that it is OK, in fact imperative, to keep looking back at the past as we move forward. After speaking to London-based producers Mumdance and Logos, and understanding how they approach sound and songwriting, DJ Mag is reminded of this term since it applies in many way to their modus operandi.
SHAWN LEE: MASTERS AT WORK
Shawn Lee is the perfect example of a dynamic artist. His varied and vast career has seen him work with The Dust Brothers and Jeff Buckley, compose award-winning videogame scores, release music on landmark labels like Wall of Sound and build up an impressive studio in the process. Point Blank took a trip to his west London Trans-Yank Studio to set Shawn a challenge – compose and record a track from scratch in two hours.

MONO VS STEREO
In the real world, the vast majority of instruments you hear are mono. That is, a single sound source coming from a single direction. As our ears and brains decode the reflections and reverb created by the space the instrument is in, the sound appears to be ‘stereo’. If you apply this logic to mixing, it would make sense that generally, each track was mono, panned to a relevant place, and only the ambient and spatial effects would be ‘true’ stereo.
PRODUCTION INTERVIEW WITH MARTIN BUTTRICH
Having begun his career in the clubs of Germany in the 90s, Martin Buttrich has gone on to become one of electronic music’s most prolific producers. He’s worked with Depeche Mode, Roger Sanchez and Kelis, plus he’s remixed Madonna, Green Velvet and Tori Amos, which earned him a Grammy nomination. On teaming up with Loco Dice, he co-founded the revered Desolat Music record label in 2007, which is now home to Guti, Shlomi Aber and Dubfire.
